How to Size a Ball Hockey Shin Guard – 6 models tested

We tested 6 ball hockey shin guard models to bring you detailed information how to size your new ball hockey shin pads. Tested models: Knapper AK7, Bauer Performance, ReasonY Gladiator 3.0 PRO, Mylec MK5, Winnwell, Raptor-X.

How to size a ball hockey shin guard

Measure the leg from the ankle to the middle of the knee and visit the manufacturer website for a specific sizing chart. To choose the right sizing please follow the step by step leg measurement process that we prepared for you.
Put your ball hockey shoes on and stand up. You will need measuring tape or a long ruler. Start to measure from the bottom where you want the ball hockey shin pads protect your ankle. This is very important as you do not want your ankle area exposed. Some players prefer to have the ball hockey shoe tongue inside the shin guards and some outside. Please make sure you account for this preference. Measure all the way to the middle of your knee (patella). Check the picture below.

Once you have the measurement, go to the manufacturer website and look at the sizing charts. We included most of the sizing charts below. This step is very important as every manufacturer has different sizing. We measured 6 ball hockey shin guards models so you can see how the sizing differ for each brand. Some brands such as Bauer and Winnwell manufacture also ice hockey shinguards and we could not find their specific sizing charts for ball hockey shin guards. Raptor-X brand uses your height to calculate the shin guard size, which is not as accurate as shin measurement.

Ball hockey shin guards sizing

Because every ball hockey brand has a different sizing chart, we measured the functional length (maximum protection)  of all 6 ball hockey shin pads that we tested. Our measurement started from the bottom edge of the shin plastic to the middle of the knee cap.

Few ball hockey shin pad models had very long shin foam and short shin plastic, we decided to measure the shin plastic as it gives you the maximum protection (functional length). ReasonY Gladiator 3.0 PRO ball hockey shinguards have adjustable knee section, so we gave you measurement range with the maximum protection. Some ball hockey shin pads models have sizing label 17 inches, but real protection is only 15,5 ” and the rest of the length is only fabric that will not protect your leg. It is important to measure your leg from the point where you want the best protection to start, to prevent injuries.

Please compare your own leg measurement with the table below, which gives you an idea how each ball hockey brand protects your shin. Some manufacturers use players height as a measuring guide, but we found it very inaccurate.

The order of the products does not represent ranking of the products as we did not test the performance of the ball hockey shin pads.

Ball hockey shin guards knee strap sizing

It is important to measure the circumference of your knee so you can get a comfortable fit, especially for ball hockey players with bigger legs.

Not all ball hockey shin guards have a knee strap, so we tested only models with the knee strap. Ball hockey involves lot of running and quick change of directions; therefore you need secure strapping that will hold your knee cap in a proper position while running, blocking or sliding. Landing on a bare knee during battles can cause a serious damage with a long recovery. Knee caps without a knee strap should be taped on your leg, but it will prevent sliding and the tape is not flexible.

We tested knee strap range and comfort level on two players. Player A with knee circumference 38cm (15 inches) and player B with knee circumference 42cm (16,5 inches). We also tested the maximum range of the knee strap. The number represent the maximum circumference of the knee when the knee strap provides comfort fit and secure attachment.

Ball hockey shin guards' sizing test conclusion.

This ball hockey shin pad sizing test proved that measuring is the most important thing before buying. If the sizing charts of the specific model does not exist or they are vague (unclear), it is always better to try it before buy it. Ball hockey player with bigger legs should always double check if the knee straps are easy to strap on and if they will provide comfortable fit. It is always beneficial, if the manufacturer shows, how is the shin pad measured and if it is functional measurement that will protect your leg.
